Impressions and Castra

So, you are thinking of coming out and trying the world of Rome?  Perhaps you are an experienced Civil or Rev War Re-enactor, or a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism... Would it surprise you to learn that WE ARE TOO?  We have numerous SCA members, former and current Civil War, Rev War, and WWII re-enactors and many others (even Stormtroopers and Imperial Officers) in our ranks.  You will fit in!  We added this page because we heard on the down low that some folks were intimidated by our focus on being correct in period and "stitch counters."  While we can provide this service if you want to improve your kit, we certainly won't hold it against you to come out and participate and do your best to fit the period. We even cheat a bit ourselves when it rains or freezes, with many wearing modern pants (turned inside out) and shoes, and sometimes using a-historical equipment (the holy Keurig... All Hail the Keurig)!  And you can find some members wearing their glasses too.  We are first and foremost out to have fun!  If you want to improve your kit, we can help.  If you just want to visit around the fire, we are good with that too!

That having been said, a simple Roman Tunic can be made of cotton, linen, or wool, and is basically an oversized pillowcase with a head and arm holes.  Leather footwear is preferred, but it's a common cheat area.  Even medieval belts can work to tuck your tunic. Many medieval style items have a basis in Roman equipment, and for us it is more important to have you than to have perfection!

And yes, we actually have 20 sets of armor if you want to be a soldier!  You just need underthings, the rest we can outfit you with fully.

So basically, please do not feel like we will hold that linen blend against you, just get yourself out to Givhans, settle into a tent (or bring your own period or modern tent, we have areas for both), and meet us around the fire. Plenty of visitors come out in Roman spirit and we don't complain! We can assure you will have a great time with like minded folks.  Did we mention the feast?  Its pretty amazing too!!!

See you under the Eagle!
